We honor drag artists as they are the most visible of our community and are often at the front of the protest lines. They face violence, aggression, threats, and degrading comments every day. Makeup, or painting and serving face, is not just a celebration of artistry and rebellion of gender norms. Warriors of nearly every culture apply war paint before battle to boost confidence, intimidate enemies, and empower the wearer. The ritual of getting into face focuses the drag queen and prepares them for them for performance and defiance.
